Raouth Abdel Sayed Saleh, 34 | MALAWI, MENYA
Mrs. Raouth’s case is one of the most heartbreaking and exceptional situations.
In an attempt to repay mounting debts and improve the family’s living conditions, her husband decided to pursue irregular migration. He took their 12-year-old son with him, hoping this would help him obtain residency abroad. However, during the journey, the unimaginable happened. The boat broke down, and according to eyewitness accounts, the father threw his son into the sea and jumped in after him. Since then, their fate remains unknown.
The tragedy left the mother suddenly facing life alone, responsible for four children—two daughters in their final year of secondary school, one daughter in preparatory school, and a young son in primary school—while also coping with the loss of her husband and child, along with overwhelming debts.
In order to survive, she sold their home and used part of the money to buy a small, unfinished house at the foot of a mountain. From that moment, her struggle began.
Together with her daughters, she has been trying to build the house with their own hands while also struggling to repay debts and cover daily living expenses. They are forced to live in extremely harsh conditions—without proper doors, without a roof, and without the basic standards of a dignified life.
Every day at dawn, she goes to garbage dumps to collect cardboard and plastic, which she sells in order to buy simple food such as bread and beans—barely enough to provide two meals a day for her family.
This is a case of extreme poverty, where life is incredibly harsh, and dreams are continuously broken and fading away.
