Marwa Mahmoud
Marwa is a separated mother of young children, effectively abandoned by her husband two years ago. He has provided no financial support, no contact, and no involvement in the children's lives, with the exception of a single payment of 500 Egyptian pounds made two Ramadans ago.
Marwa supports her family entirely on her own through two sources of informal income: domestic cleaning and floor-mopping work in other people's homes, and small-scale vegetable trading at a local market. She keeps her stock modest — around 2,000 Egyptian pounds worth of goods — yielding a profit of roughly 150 to 200 Egyptian pounds per sale. The majority of her earnings go toward rent, leaving very little for food. On difficult days, the family's meal may be no more than a fried tomato or potato.
Her 15-year-old daughter accompanies her to help sell vegetables on the bridge, where she is regularly subjected to harassment, which is a source of significant distress for Marwa.
Despite her circumstances, Marwa has maintained a consistent record of repaying her debts to suppliers, even during periods of zero profit.
