Waguih Shawky
This is a family of four — a husband, a wife, and two children of school age — living in conditions of severe deprivation for nearly 20 years.
The husband's sole source of income is a tuk-tuk he owns, generating approximately 50 to 60 Egyptian pounds per day. However, he was recently involved in a serious accident that left him with a severe pelvic fracture. He requires surgery involving metal pins and screws but cannot afford the procedure, leaving him injured and his ability to work compromised. The two children are not in school due to the cost and are not currently working, leaving the family entirely dependent on the husband's limited and uncertain daily earnings.
The family's home is in a critical state of disrepair. It has no windows, no doors, no ceiling, and no kitchen. The roof was previously made from wooden reeds, but was removed entirely after snakes repeatedly fell into the home through it — an unaffordable problem to fix properly. The family sleeps on blankets spread on the floor. The bathroom has no door, and the mother and daughter take turns standing guard outside for one another's privacy. The family has lived this way for close to two decades.
The household has no appliances of any kind — no refrigerator, no stove, and no washing machine. Cooking is done with basic pots over an open arrangement with no proper kitchen space.
